He is a trusted advisor to organizations in several industries, including real estate, luxury retail, insurance, financial services, beverages, chemicals, and biotech. He is also on the executive team at AIIR Consulting, a leadership consultancy specializing in coaching, leadership development, and team effectiveness.
Derek’s background is in psychological assessment, executive search, and succession planning. He specialized in personality and leadership at Hogan Assessment Systems, the foremost authority on using personality to predict success in executive leadership roles. Derek was also in executive search at Russell Reynolds Associates, where he co-created their leadership assessment methodology, evaluated Fortune 500 executives in the context of recruiting, and consulted with organizations and boards on C-suite talent planning.
Derek is a contributor to the Harvard Business Review and a columnist at Psychology Today. He recently published a book, Overcoming Bad Leadership in Organizations, that helps leaders, talent management professionals, and psychologists improve toxic and ineffective leadership in organizations. He is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics ranging from succession planning in the C-suite to HR technology and innovations in psychological assessment. He is a member of the Society for Consulting Psychology (SCP), Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), and on the board of the SIOP Professional Practice Series, a publication for organizational scientists and executives.
Derek holds an MBA from Indiana University and a PhD in business psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
